Writing and Translating

Besides subtitle and surtitle texts, I have translated complete opera libretti for CD recordings (Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni and Le nozze di Figaro) and for publication (Der Stein der Weisen by ‘Mozart and others’, for Garsington Opera)..  I have also written one singing translation, i.e. to be sung in English on the stage:  this was Beethoven’s Fidelio for Opera Northern Ireland, and remains one of my proudest achievements!

I write programme notes for concerts by various organisations including the English Chamber Orchestra, usually at Cadogan Hall or the Wigmore Hall.  I now have notes for nearly 500 concert works under my belt, and the list is growing.  This is an enjoyable activity, though often some knotty research is involved for the obscurer pieces.  When there are sung items, I supply texts and English translations as well:  ever-growing list of lieder/chanson/song translations available — please ask!

I have also written programme notes (and translations of song texts) for celebrity recitals, including Juan Diego Florez, Kiri Te Kanawa and Frederica von Stade, Dame Felicity Lott, Simon Keenlyside and Anne Sofie von Otter;  opera synopses for Glyndebourne, The Royal Opera and Chelsea Opera Group;  programme book articles for Glyndebourne Touring Opera and The Royal Opera and Royal Ballet;  and chapters on orchestration in the ENO Guide to Salome and Elektra and The Wagner Compendium.

If you need programme notes and/or song translations for a concert or recital, please contact me at jg.burton@virgin.net .
